A Champion of African Trade and Unity
With heavy hearts, we mourn the passing of Raila Amolo Odinga, the Rt. Hon. former Prime Minister of Kenya, who left us on October 15, 2025, at 80 in Koothattukulam, India, following a cardiac arrest. Known as Baba Agano, Raila was a visionary whose relentless pursuit of intra-African trade transformed the continent’s economic landscape. Raila’s leadership was pivotal in strengthening the East African Community (EAC), where he championed policies that reduced trade barriers and fostered cross-border commerce. As members of the East African Business Council (EABC), we benefited immensely from his efforts, which spurred job creation and economic growth across the region.
His advocacy for the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA) further cemented his legacy, pushing for a unified market to unlock Africa’s economic potential. As the African Union’s High Representative for Infrastructure Development (2018–2023), he advanced transformative projects like the Cairo-Cape Town highway, laying the foundation for seamless continental trade. At the Fidelis Leadership Institute, we drew inspiration from Raila’s commitment to ethical leadership and inclusive growth.
His vision shaped our programs, empowering leaders to navigate the opportunities of AfCFTA and the EAC.
Raila’s passing leaves a void, but his dream of a prosperous, united Africa endures in every trade route and aspiring leader.
Rest in power,
Baba Agano
Signed,
